Sweetening
Posted on October 9, 2008
After three weeks of doldrums, I finally got off my ass and started the final edit last night. I actually finished a scene. Audio mix and all. The radio interview scene is what I tackled.
I sound pretty pleased with myself, and I am. I’d been in a mental block, a funk about starting this. But, it wasn’t much work at all. Like trimming a Cristmas tree: the hard parts done, just make it pretty.
I shouldn’t gloat so much. It’s like one of my kids putting away one sock and claiming to be making progress in cleaning their room. What is it? Like thirty more scenes to go?

Filler

I mentioned to Lori last night that I had a blog on this site. She seemed surprised and interested. I guess she’ll come on by for a peek. So, I’d better start filling it with content.
I don’t tell enough people often enough how wonderful my wife is.
I often think of that Bernard Shaw play Man and Superman, the monologue about artists:
“The true artist will let his wife starve, his children go barefoot… sooner than work at anything but his art. …He steals the mother’s milk and blackens it to make printers’ ink to scoff at her and glorify ideal women with. …Since marriage began, the great artist has been known as a bad husband. But he is worse: he is a child-robber, a bloodsucker, a hypocrite, and a cheat. Perish the race and wither a thousand women if only the sacrifice of them enable him to act Hamlet better, to paint a finer picture, to write a deeper poem, a greater play, a profounder philosophy! …Of all human struggles there is none so treacherous and remorseless as the struggle between the artist man and the mother woman. Which shall use up the other? that is the issue between them. And it is all the deadlier because, in your romanticist cant, they love one another.”
Not only does she put up with my artistic distemper; she manages the house, finances, cooks, organizes our social calendar, educates the children, and freelances as a writer. She’s a competent ‘pr-edit-or’ (producer, shooter, editor), she’s finishing grad school in education (with the certifications), and she’s a loyal ally.
I’m inspired by her. She’s my hero.

The Future
Posted on October 6, 2008
In the past year I’ve tackled three fundraising films, a short, and a feature. I’ve taught two university courses, helmed three recruiting videos, countless instructional objects, and engineered a dozen presentation installations.
I’m a father, husband, a brother, and a friend.
The beat goes on. The cycle repeats. As long as I hang on, I’ll circle that Massey Wheel again (apologies to Shakespeare.)

Am I an luddite old fart for not respecting the intrinsic value of blogging?
Who cares what I, an affable fanboy, has to say?
My message for posterity is my kids.
I know enough not to make an ass of myself by publicly drooling over actresses and raging against the entertainment I consume. Most importantly, I why would I want to go to all the trouble trying to promote myself into something I’m not. Who would I be trying to convince? Mostly myself?
I would like to believe I have better things to do, even when I don’t.

Sorry

I know I keep on saying that I was finished editing. But now it’s true. I finished the music video and the credit montage. I’m now out of scenes to cut. All that’s left is sweetening, segueing, and audio mix.
It’s October. I have to be finished by Halloween or go insane.
The good thing is that audiences have been recieving it well. Barring the missing work, they approve.
